Program Areas

Referral: Staff direct and follow-up referrals to seniors for specific resources.

Information:Staff answers questions about resources, services, activities, and programs either through phone or thrQugh personal contact.

Transportation: Long distance and in-town drivers are available for medical appointments, shopping for goods and services, and for social and recreational reasons. Seniors pay a set rate, which is paid to the drivers and towards fuel costs.

Home and Maintenance - House Cleaning - Snow removal: A list of these service providers is supplied with a recommended fee to be paid directly to these workers.

Reading/Letter and card writing Assistance with forms: Seniors requesting help in completing forms may call the office. Assistance with most forms is at no charge.

Volunteer Visitors: Seniors who are lonely may request a friendly visitor. The volunteer will visit the senior regularly as prearranged.

Emergency Response Systems: Portage Service for Seniors administers Portage & District Lifeline used in private homes and non-serviced dwellings. This emergency response system provides a ‘personal, caring connection’ 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing peace of mind you and your loved ones deserve. Help is always just a push of a button away.

Telephone checks: Volunteers call seniors to reduce their sense of isolation, and anxiety about living alone and to ensure that they are safe and well.

Errands: Volunteers perform a variety of daily living activities for the user, such as bill paying, picking up or dropping off goods such as library books, and other tasks.

Congregate Meals: Meals resemble a family or friendship setting as much as possible with every party contributing to meal preparation and serving according to capacity, including users, volunteers and the community as’ a whole. The charge for the meal ($5.00) covers the cost of purchasing the food. Meal programs have been established at four locations: Oaktree Towers, Stephen’s apartments, Rotary Park and Regency House. The meals are open to seniors in the community.

Tenant Companion: Supports seniors in a range of services in community congregate living, settings. Examples: promotes exercise, social outings and friendly visits.

E.R.IK.: Emergency. response information kit. Available through Portage Service for Seniors, this is a kit containing your medical information for transport with you by emergency personnel. We appreciate a one dollar donation to help cover the cost of the kit.

Helping Hand Portage Ia Prairie, Inc. (known as Meals on Wheels): Provides a hot meal to persons who are con.fined to their homes or who for any reason are incapable of preparing meals. The meals are delivered hot at noon Monday to Friday, excluding holidays. Frozen meals for the weekends are available. The cost of the meal is $5.00.

Seniors Online: Computers are. available during regular office hours. Access to Internet and printing. Assistance available if requested. Please call to reserve a time slot. Locations are Portage Service for Seniors and ‘Regency House.

As a Registered Charitable Organization, donations are accepted and tax receipts can be issued.




MEALS ON WHEELS

‘Helping Hand Portage la Prairie Inc.’

Is an organization dedicated to giving support and assistance to senior and handicapped citizens of the community who, with a minimum of assistance, can continue to maintain themselves in their own familiar surroundings.

Services Provided:

Noon delivery of a hot meal, five days a week, excluding holidays, to persons who are confined to their homes because of age, infirmity, or illness; persons who for any reason are incapable of preparing meals. Dietary meals are provided following consultation with the Meals On Wheels coordinator. The meals are prepared at the Lions’ Prairie Manor.

Who is eligible for assistance?

Any resident of Portage la Prairie who requires assistance in order to maintain themselves in their own homes:

  • Senior Citizens
  • Handicapped
  • Convalescent
  • Lonely

What is the cost?

Meals are provided at a minimum cost to the client.
How does one apply for assistance?

Simply phone 239-6312 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. — 4:30 p.m. and all necessary arrangements will be made. Members and friends of families are encouraged to refer names to our office of persons in need of this service.

Is there a need for Volunteers?

Certainly. Without Volunteers this program would not be able to function. Volunteers are required to assist with the delivery of the hot meal over the noon hour. If you have a car you can volunteer as a driver, or, if not, you can volunteer to assist a driver and take the meal in; call 239-6312 for more information regarding volunteer opportunities.

Updates
  • Portage la Prairie is in the process of planning an Age-Friendly Awareness Day. Private citizens and the local businesses will be invited to learn about becoming more age-friendly.

Age-Friendly Cities Project Portage la Prairie
Portage la Prairie Dominion Post Office BuildingFocus groups were conducted in Portage la Prairie in October and November of 2006 to identify specific features of what makes the city age-friendly. With the assistance of Jennifer Sarna, Manager of Community Development of the City of Portage la Prairie, and an Advisory Committee participants were recruited for the study. Four focus groups were held with seniors (37 individuals participated in total), who ranged in age from 61 to 92 years old. One focus group (involving seven individuals) was conducted with caregivers of seniors, and three focus groups were held with professional staff, business people, and representatives of volunteer organizations, respectively (each with seven individuals). Participant in the WHO Age-Friendly Cities Project:
The City of Portage la Prairie in Manitoba was one of the cities involved in the World Health Organization Global Age-Friendly Cities Project, with Verena Menec as the research lead. Results from the focus groups held in Portage la Prairie were provided to the WHO and, along with those from the other cities, incorporated into the Age-Friendly Cities Guide. Go
