Home support services and programs for seniors or handicapped residents living in the R.M. of Siglunes and Grahamdale


What is L.I.F.E.?
Living Independence for Elders (L.I.F.E.) is a non-profit organization to assist and facilitate seniors and the disabled to remain independent, safe and comfortable in their own homes for as long as they are able. We service residents living in the R.M. of Siglunes and Grahamdale.

Our goals are to help and assist seniors to live independently and with comfort in their own homes or apartment as long as possible, and remain active members of the community.  We are Incorporated and Insured. We are a registered Charity.


Where is L.I.F.E. Located?
We are located in the TBJ Mall (4-61 Main St) in Ashern.  Office Hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.  When the Resource Coordinator is not available please leave a message and your call will be returned as soon as possible.

Why Call L.I.F.E.?
If you enjoy having a place of your own but require assistance we can help.  Some of the volunteer services or programs have user fees, which are reasonable.  Services are provided on volunteer availability.

Programs / Services Offered by L.I.F.E.
    Daily Hello – a program designed for individuals who are ill, injured or isolated in the community. The volunteer will contact a client at a pre-arranged time to see if all is well.

    Transportation - provides transportation to and from an appointment or other commitments in Winnipeg or local communities.

    Home Maintenance – regular light housekeeping, vacuuming and dusting, laundry or heavy housing cleaning, such as “spring/fall” cleaning are available.

    Yard Maintenance / Handi-Helper - Yard work, snow removal, grass cutting, raking leaves, or other odd jobs you need done. Handiman to fix door locks, painting, cleaning eaves troughs or whatever help you require.

    Friendly Visitor – a volunteer donates her or his time sharing hobbies, reading aloud, going for walks, or just sitting and sharing memories.

    Lifeline - Personal Response Service - seniors living alone have the assurance of being safe and secure. A simple press of a button can bring emergency help if required.

    ERIK (Emergency Response Information Kit) – A small plastic folder that attaches to the front of the fridge, containing pertinent medical information, ambulance attendants can access in case of emergency.

    Resource Library & Information Center – We have an immense amount of information on everything to do with being able to stay as independent as possible, as well as information on pretty well any programs that would be of interest or service to those in the community.

    Referral Agency – help fill out forms, as well as help get you in contact with various programs at all levels of government.

    Medical Equipment Loan Service - crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, bath chairs etc. are available on loan.

    SaY Read (Seniors and Youth Read) – are volunteers that sit and read with elementary school children to help them improve their grammar and reading skills.

    Wool'n Needles – Is a group of people who come together every week to Knit, Crochet, quilt or just sit and visit.  All sales from products are donated to local charities.

    Ashern Meal Program - Meals on wheels is a voluntary community service, which provides nutritious meals to many community members. These meals are provided in Ashern and Moosehorn, 5 days a week (Monday – Friday)

    Congregate Meals – participants are encouraged to get together sever times a week for a well balanced, nutrious, home cooked meal served at noon at the Pioneer Manor Common Room. Meals are prepared by the Meal Coordinator.

    Ashern Adult Day Program - Meets three times a week – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday – to just get together do some crafts, woodworking projects, exercises and much more! This program is available for those who do live on their own and receive Home Care.

    Shopping/Errands- A volunteer can assist a senior with shopping, banking, paying bills etc.

    Community Volunteer Income Tax Program - Trained volunteers will complete your tax return at no charge (subject to meeting eligibility guidelines)

    Recreational Activities - any questions regarding activities please call our office at 768-2187
    • STEP (Seniors Together Exercise Program) meets three times a week at the Pioneer Manor (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) 9:30am – 10:00 am
    • Penny Bingo – Thursday’s 9:30 am at the Pioneer Manor
    • Whist/Carpet Bowling – Fridays (alternating) 1:30pm in the Common Room at the Pioneer Manor
    • Pioneer Birthday Club – Once a month we get together to celebrate birthdays! 2:30pm at the Pioneer Manor
    • Bean Bag Toss – Thursday’s 1:30pm Common Room at the Pioneer Manor
    • Spiritual Gathering – Once a month get together to sing hymms, and a Bible study
