This program offers services for seniors, and those with disabilities, to help them remain independent, safe and comfortable in their own homes and communities. These services are available with the help of volunteers and fee-for-service workers and are provided to people who live in the Town of Stonewall and the R.M.s of Rosser, Woodlands and the southern portion of Rockwood. A Board of Directors, consisting of members from the communities and areas served, give direction to the Coordinators who are responsible for the planning, implementation, evaluation and administration of services.

Services Offered
DRIVER/ESCORT PROGRAMDriver/Escort program
If you require assistance with transportation, arrangements can be made for a volunteer driver to pick you up and take you to your destination. A rate schedule is available that outlines the amount needed to reimburse drivers for the cost of gas.
This service is extended to provide people going for cancer treatment transportation to their treatment centre at a subsidized rate. Call the office for arrangements.

MOBILITY AID LENDING SERVICE
The S.I.S.R.C provides a service that lends crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs and personal care items at no cost. Donation of new or used equipment is always appreciated. Tax receipts are issued for any monetary donations which are gratefully accepted.

HANDY HELPER &  HOUSECLEANING
Help with housekeeping, yard work, snow removal, house repairs, laundry, etc., can be arranged to be done by reliable fee-for-service workers for a reasonable price. A Seniors Resource coordinator will follow up to ensure work has been completed to satisfaction.

FRIENDLY VISITING
If you or someone you know would benefit by having a volunteer visit on a regular basis, this can be arranged. Time may be spent sharing hobbies, reading aloud from newspapers, playing games or just plain having a chat.

TELECHEK – TELEPHONE  BUDDYTelecheck
For someone who lives alone, a daily hello and conversation with a cheerful voice can be very reassuring. Telechek can also reduce the number of times that someone is ill or injured without anyone being aware of the situation.

LIFELINE

Local volunteers provide the installation and maintenance of Lifeline equipment. An installation and monthly fee is required and payable to Victoria Lifeline.

Assistance is available to help with the completion of difficult forms and provide information on resources.

FUNDING
The Interlake Regional Health Authority, through Manitoba Health, provides funding on an annual basis to hire staff to coordinate services provided by the S.I.S.R.C. Additional funds, used to help cover operational expenses, are gratefully received from the Town of Stonewall and the R.M.s of Rosser, Woodlands and Rockwood. Some fundraising and the financial support from local foundations also help cover extra costs.

Age-Friendly and Town of Stonewall

Age Friendly ManitobaAge-Friendly Manitoba and Town of Stonewall supports seniors in leading active, socially engaged, independent lives that contribute to healthy aging. An Age-Friendly community:
  • Recognizes the diversity among older Manitobans
  • Encourages healthy, active aging
  • Supports the contributions of older Manitobans
  • Promotes the participation of older Manitobans in all aspects of our community
  • Engages stakeholders in building age-friendly communities
  • Creates accessible, safe environments for older adults
  • Treats people of all ages with respect

Age-Friendly initiative kicks off in Stonewall
Stonewall’s Age-Friendly advisory committee (AFAC) held a community workshop last week to look at how Stonewall can become more accessible for its aging citizens. The meeting, held at the Lions Community Centre on March 13, was attended by roughly 20 people and was meant to give all interested parties a voice.
