Age-Friendly Photography Study: Summary of Discussion Group Dauphin, ManitobaIn February of 2008, seniors from Dauphin’s Multi-Purpose Seniors Centre were invited to be part of a research study about age-friendly communities through the Centre on Aging at the University of Manitoba. As
part of the project, seniors took photographs within their community to show agefriendly features and barriers to age-friendliness. In June
of 2008, the group of seniors came together to talk about age-friendly priorities, issues, and challenges within their community. The following is
a summary of the priorities,
issues, and challenges identified
by the group of seniors.
Age-Friendly ProjectsAddressing safety concerns, for example:
- Addressing the pedestrian road signage on 3rd and 4th Avenue N.W. in Dauphin to better highlight the crosswalks on Main Street.
- Discuss with Manitoba Infrastructure & Transportation the possibility of lowering the speed limit from 70 kph to 50 kph on Main Street South in Dauphin, from the location where the existing speed limit changes to the south boundary of the community.
- Application for an In Motion Grant to get the seniors on the walking track after knee and hip surgeries
- A modified aqua fit program will be offered at a reduced rate two days a week to get more elderly people in the pool.
