Meals on WheelsThe food feeds the body but the wonderful people doing the delivery feed the soul with their caring.
Our Mission: Our Mission: To promote the dignity and independence of the elderly and/or the disabled and other persons by delivering nutritious meals and coordinating needed services.
History: The program began in 1976, by a group of volunteers. Meals are delivered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, during supper hours. In 1986, the Support Services Department out of the Gordon Howard Centre started handling the coordination of the program. The program continues to grow, as does the need. Our clients are people living independently in the community who require nutritional assistance. Referrals for the service come from the hospital, social agencies, physicians, friends, family and the clients themselves.
Meals on Wheels Goals: The overall goal of the Meals on Wheels program is to enable seniors to remain living at home with maximum self-sufficiency and independence, for as long as possible. Good nutrition is a major factor in keeping seniors independent and healthy. There are however a number of elderly individuals who cannot shop for or prepare their own meals nor can they go out to eat. These seniors therefore rely on home delivered meals which allow them to remain independent.
